RSI opens applications for annual undergraduate scholarship, offers funding for student attendees at Railway Interchange

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 9, 2019 – The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) announced that it is accepting 2019/2020 school year applications for its Thomas D. Simpson Annual Undergraduate Scholarship, and that it is creating a new scholarship to help students attend Railway Interchange 2019.

The Thomas D. Simpson Annual Undergraduate Scholarship, named for RSI’s former president, awards funding to full time students whose parents work for RSI member companies or RSI-affiliated organizations. The RSI scholarship is competitive and based on the applicant’s academic achievement, community/school involvement, and essay response. The scholarship program provides a minimum of five college scholarships in amounts ranging from $2,500-$5,000.

“This year, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the RSI scholarship program, which helps students pursue degrees in fields ranging from business to transportation,” said RSI President Mike O’Malley. “We are proud to continue this tradition of assisting outstanding students from rail supply industry families with their college and career goals. We are grateful to the RSI member companies and individuals who continue to make this scholarship program possible.”

Applicants must be the child or dependent of a current employee whose company is a member of the Railway Supply Institute or an individual member in good standing of these organizations: the Air Brake Association, Inc. (ABA), the International Association of Railway Operating Officers (IAROO), the League of Railway Women (LRW), Locomotive Maintenance Officers Association (LMOA), or Railcar Technical Services Association (RTSA, formerly MARTS).

The application deadline for the 2019-2020 Thomas D. Simpson Annual Undergraduate Scholarship is June 14, 2019 and winners will be announced in July. Information on the scholarship program is available at https://www.rsiweb.org/scholarship. The application and additional eligibility requirements can be found at https://www.rsiweb.org/files/scholarship-application-19_20.pdf.

RSI is showing additional support for college students by offering Railway Interchange conference scholarships to 10 undergraduate or graduate engineering students who demonstrate interest in the rail industry. Students will receive $500 for travel, along with hotel accommodations and complimentary registration for Railway Interchange, scheduled on September 22 – 25, 2019. The scholarships will be open to students at a consortium of five colleges and universities who are part of the National University Rail (NuRail) Center. NuRail will administer the application process and award the scholarships. Additional information on the Railway Interchange scholarships will be announced soon.

RSI welcomes contributions to RSI scholarships by individuals or companies to allow more scholarships to be awarded. More information about contributions to the Thomas D. Simpson Scholarship program may be found in the donation form.
